RICHARD HEEPS

RICHARD HEEPS - Richard Heeps is known for his distinctive photographic style, defined by richly saturated colour and a sophisticated sense of composition.
Whether capturing striking interiors, still life, or evocative landscapes, his work reflects a deep affection and empathy for his subject matter. His analogue approach to photography, paired with his bold aesthetic, consistently pushes the boundaries of the medium.
A dedicated film-based photographer, Richard works with a variety of vintage analogue cameras and embraces a hands-on process from start to finish. He considers himself to have three studios: the location where he shoots, his darkroom where he produces his master prints, and his home studio where each piece is meticulously mounted, framed, and finished. This in-house process ensures full creative control and allows him to maintain both accessibility and uncompromising quality.
Although raised in East Anglia, Richard has long been drawn to American culture. The speed, colour, and energy of the American lifestyle, shaped by his early experiences visiting U.S. air bases and his fascination with drag racing, are woven into his imagery. The influence of ‘American colour’ continues to guide both his aesthetic and technical choices.
Richard began exhibiting his work from a young age and has maintained a lifelong dedication to sharing his art. Early in his career, New York City and its cinematic skyline featured prominently in his paintings and photographs.
Now based in Cambridge, Richard continues to create new work from his home studio and darkroom, often revisiting and reinterpreting unseen negatives from his extensive archive spanning over two decades. He remains deeply connected to his global audience through exhibitions, collaborations with galleries, and an active online presence.
